We do so much for our kids because we love them to bits.
We dive under them at playgrounds, let them dress us like gaudy princess bunnies while we crouch in makeshift forts, and tell them all day long how smart, funny, handsome, insightful, beautiful and awesome they are.
Then there’s the times when we’re at our wit’s end and have things we want to say, but can’t do so directly. So we say something completely different to what we’re thinking. Something exponentially kinder than what’s dancing at the tip of our tongues.
These are some of the things we say when we can’t say what we really want to.

LOL – oh yes I’ve said them all – in fact lately I’ve just been saying exactly what I mean so really, they stop asking. xo

You are awesome.
I try to be patient, but OH MY GOD the ride home from D.C. almost ended with one kid on the roof & the other in the trunk.
Perfection!

Thanks!
Language with kids is so important. Just like our parents didn’t fool us with their words, we don’t fool our kids either. Cute post, but very true. (I use some of those with my daughter, but with my son, I have to say what I mean.)

My kids take these words as kind warnings, then listen closely.
What I say: “If you do that again I will bite you.”
What I mean: “If you do that again I will bite you.”
But I agree with your list, too.

I’m a vegetarian, so there’s no biting here.
Ahhh I love it! I especially love “Is that so?” I say that constantly. And that’s exactly what I mean. Hopefully, if I say that they will be satisfied and I won’t have to continue trying to figure out what they are saying.

My 5yo has had an alien-chicken voice since she started talking, and sometimes she talks so fast in such gibberish imaginary who-knows-what, that the “Is that so?” is pretty stands fare around here.
I shared this over on facebook today. Many laughs ensued, because all my mom friends admitted it’s true!
Thank you for sharing!
Of course!
Love it because it’s so true!!
Thanks Mandy!
“We’ll see” used to mean you get your way, but now my kids are older (4, 7, 10 grades) it means “not on your nelly, so bugger off and leave me alone”, you know, reality.
Ahhh…your translations are a bit more complex than mine, but I still like them.
I say “Wow, really?” to my mother all the time. What does that say?

I do the same to my mom, who is a talker. Means pretty much the same thing.
Unfortunately, I think someone clued my kids in already!
